Solar Cars 2012
Teaming math, science, creativity and the power of the sun, Parkside Intermediate School sixth grade students put their skills to the test with solar racing cars. The race was a unit project that corresponds with the National Junior Solar Sprint program. Students are provided solar panels, motors, gears and wheels and left to their creative devices to come up with the chassis for a solar-powered vehicle. Students learned about design, math and science principles, and electricity basics and worked in groups to design a vehicle they hoped would travel the furthest in a race. Students timed and measured the velocity and traveling distance of each vehicle. Sixth graders Kate Fulton and Audrey Lyle from John Gast’s class won the race.
